Our Mission

At Terrabuffer, our mission is simple: Preserve Ohio's natural waterways and increase native flora populations. We do this by collaborating with farmers and landowners who want to dedicate portions of their land to vital conservation efforts. We are committed to restoring the presence of native plants and combating water pollution to protect and enhance Ohio’s natural ecosystems.

Growing Environmental Problems in Ohio

Pollution in Lake Erie

Decline in Native Plant Species

Decline in Native Plant Species

The Lake Erie Watershed is the most populated of the Great Lake basins. Of all the Great Lakes, it is exposed to the most urbanization stress from industrialization and agricultural practices. The most persistent environmental issue facing Lake Erie today is poor water quality, which is a result of harmful algal blooms and oxygen depleted areas.

Decline in Native Plant Species

Decline in Native Plant Species

Decline in Native Plant Species

Ohio is home to almost 1,900 native plant species found in prairies, forests, wetlands, and other types of habitats. The Natural Areas and Preserves (DNAP) Rare Plant List has determined that as of 2023, 93 native species are presumed extinct, 271 endangered, and 159 threatened in Ohio. The decline of native species is driven by the introduction of invasive species, residential and commercial development, and climate change.

Waterway Contamination

Decline in Native Plant Species

Waterway Contamination

Ohio streams, rivers, and tributaries continue to face growing exposure to pollutants and contaminants. Nonpoint source pollution from agricultural activities, urban and rural runoff, and abandoned mines are the biggest contributors to Ohio water pollution. Many of these waterways are sources of drinking water and recreation for residents.

Our Solution

Nurturing Native Landscapes, Enriching Futures

We are passionate about restoring Ohio’s natural landscapes by reintroducing native plants onto the properties of farmers and residents. Native species are effective at preventing erosion, filtering out sediments and other pollutants, conserving water, and attracting wildlife. Our goal is provide cost effective strategies to get native fauna into your backyard.
